Here’s How to Make IKEA’s Iconic Swedish Meatballs at Home
Find out how to make these infamous IKEA meatballs at home with their official recipe!
Listen up, IKEA fans!
If you’re a fan of those famous and oh-so-creamy IKEA Swedish meatballs served up in stores, you can make them at home thanks to their official Swedish Meatballs recipe that was released via Twitter, complete with iconic illustrated instructions!
I made them for my family and can confirm this recipe is insanely delish!
Honestly, this comforting meal is a must-try recipe, and I promise it will be a home run! The combination of a flavorful fried then baked meatball alongside this homemade buttery, creamy sauce is so darn GOOD. My whole family enjoyed this from-scratch dinner and have already asked for it again soon!
I can also appreciate that this Swedish Meatball recipe calls for simple pantry ingredients! I had most of these common pantry items on hand, and thinking it may be the case for you as well. Since the recipe ingredients are in metric measurements from IKEA, I actually found Ikea’s Swedish Meatballs recipe in US measurements via CNN.com, and followed their instructions for ease.
Tips for making the IKEA Swedish Meatball recipe:
- The recipe doesn’t specify how much or what kind of oil to pan fry the meatballs in. I coated the bottom of a cast-iron skillet with about a 1/4 inch deep of canola oil and that worked fine. I’m sure you could use another cooking oil you prefer.
- The directions say to cook in the oven for 30 minutes, but our meatballs were done in about 20, so keep that in mind to avoid overcooking. Mine were possibly smaller in size.
- It leaves out how much salt and pepper to use in the meatballs and the sauce. If you like well-seasoned food like us, you’ll want to make sure and use generous portions to taste.
- This batch made 30 meatballs for us, and quite a bit of sauce – and we had leftovers, so I feel like this could serve 4-5 hungry people easily.
- The cream sauce will thicken as it cools, so it can easily be thinned out a little using extra beef or vegetable broth.

cook time: 30 MINUTES
total time: 1 HOUR 15 MINUTES
Delicious Swedish meatballs made with ground pork and ground beef, breadcrumbs, garlic, and onions.
Ingredients
For the meatballs:
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1/2 pound ground pork
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 1 clove of garlic, crushed or minced
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
- 1/3 cup of whole milk
- salt and pepper, to taste
- 1/4 cup canola oil (for frying meatballs)
For the sauce:
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 1/3 cup plain flour
- 5 fluid ounces vegetable stock
- 5 fluid ounces beef stock
- 5 fluid ounces thick double cream
- 2 teaspoons soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
Directions
1
Combine ground pork, ground beef, and eggs. Add breadcrumbs, garlic, and onions into the mixture.
2
Roll the mixture into small balls and let them sit in the fridge for 30 minutes to solidify their shape. The original recipe suggested this would produce 20, but when making, I had closer to 30 meatballs.
3
Heat oil on medium heat and pan-fry the meatballs, browning all sides.
4
Place the meatballs in an oven-proof dish and cook for 30 minutes at 350 degrees. Check at the 20-minute mark to ensure they don't overcook.
5
For the sauce, whisk together melted butter and flour for about 2 minutes to create a roux. Add the vegetable and beef broths together while continuing to whisk. Add heavy cream, soy sauce, and dijon mustard. It'll start to thicken into a gravy-type sauce. Serve on top of meatballs and enjoy!

This homemade Swedish cream sauce is the BEST!
Simple ingredients such as butter, heavy cream, all-purpose flour, and broth get whisked together on the stove to create a gravy-type sauce to go over the meatballs. I love that it’s super flavorful with soy sauce and Dijon mustard.
All of your efforts will result in a memorable family dinner all will LOVE!
My kids are still pretty picky and they were all in for this IKEA Swedish Meatballs dinner idea.
I ended up making some simple mashed potatoes on the stove using yellow potatoes, and they paired great with the meatballs. I also served up some frozen mixed veggies as an easy side dish (not pictured) and all three items together made a perfect cozy meal at home.
I have never heard of “double cream”, what is it?
That’s the same as heavy whipping cream, Pat!
Where do the eggs come into the recipe? Also, do you think they can be left out – food allergy over here.
Good question! I think this was missed in the recipe. From other meatball recipes that I’ve read, it looks like the egg is mixed in with the meat in Step 1.
Yup, that is correct – it goes in with the meat in step 1. I have updated the recipe.
It’s like Russian kotlety. Some people use eggs, others don’t.
Can we replace the pork with chicken? Or is using additional beef the very alternative?
I’m also going to need the recipe for their lingonberry jam haha ; love to have this with their meatballs! 🙂
Oh interesting! I haven’t tried but sounds yum!
They serve it with the meatballs at Ikea – so yummy!
