red velvet box cake cookies recipe – baked cookies on a plate

This yummy and easy red velvet box cake cookies recipe is easy to bake for your family! The powdered sugar gives them a pretty red crinkle cookie look, and they turn out so chewy and soft.

Hip Tip: For an equally delicious but different variation, use a lemon box cake mix instead of Red Velvet.

My daughter will be excited to make these. Thank you. Off subject I just played the my coke Christmas sweepstakes game and won a twelve pack of coke. Wow : )

    • Jackie O

Congratulations Eyez on winning 2 cases from Coke. But I wanted to ask you, since you metioned it, how do you play the game? I put (two) 2liter caps codes on line which gave me 6 points and one cap said I also got credit for that Christmas game, but then I could not figure where to play? I appreciate your help or if anyone else has time to school me I appreciate it too!

      Thanks 🙂

  4. Jill

Awesome, I was looking for a new Christmas cookie. Wish I had a lemon in the house, I would make them now.

  5. SK

I don’t eat cake and I’ve had these moneymaker red velvet cake mixes sitting around for a while so I’m about to put these in the oven.

  8. heather c

I’ve done this exact recipe but with Devils Food Cake mix, they are amazing! I never even thought to try red velvet cake! Perfect for X-mas! :o)

  12. ann

I have make these before in lemon, but I just mixed a lemon cake mix with a sm container of cool whip. Roll in powdered sugar and bake. Easy and oh so good!!

  13. madhusree33@yahoo.co.in

I have tried this too with devil food cake a couple of times, they were a hit when I took them to school too…. but they have too much transfat… better to make the cake mix at home.. after reading this I stopped buying the cake mix box all together….

  14. Rebecca

I make red velvet cookie sandwiches using the cake mix & homemade frosting. Probably the easiest thing to make (well that & peppermint bark) and people rave about them.

  15. julia

    thank you 🙂

  16. Shop92010

Hi Lina! Do you flatten out the balls a bit once placed on the cookie sheet or do they flatten out enough to crackle on their own? Thanks so much for the great recipe!

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

No they flatten out in the oven. Very easy 🙂 Thanks for the question.

  17. Lisa

Can’t wait to try this! My sister luvs Red Velvet Cake! Thanks for the recipe always looking to add new goodies to my Christmas menu!

  18. Hazel

I tried this last summer and my kids love it!
I’m planning to make it again as a gift.

  19. Rachel

Corn allergy can it be done without cornstarch?

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

Yes, I’ve accidentally forgot before and it was fine actually 🙂 Thanks!!

  20. Kelli

Do you have to put in the zest? Will they turn out without it?

    • Tori

I just made them without and they were still wonderful! I didn’t have it so just left it out.

  21. Linda Deakins

Can you frost these cookies and omit the powdered sugar and corn starch?

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

I haven’t tried that yet but I’m sure you could! 🙂

  22. Paulette

The recipe on the cake box is different. 3 eggs not 2, and 1cp powdered sugar instead of 3/4. has anyone tried that? What’s the difference taste wise?

    • jen

Did you try it with the 3 eggs because mine came out really dry with 2 eggs I even added white chocolate chips to half the battery. They were OK but not a hit in my home. Won’t make these again

  23. jen

I tried this recipe today and cookies came out dry and cakey. Did not win any likes on these cookies. 🙁

  24. Cheyenne

I made them and the turned out really moist and they tasted great. They definitely have my yes.

  25. Chava

I made these today and they turned out great! Very simple and delicious!

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

      Great! Thanks Chava!

  26. Renee Donaldson

First, let me say thank you for sharing this recipe! I substituted lemon extract for the fresh lemon rind but followed the recipe to a T otherwise and these turned out terrific!! It could easily become my go to recipe for get togethers, sweet treat, or indulgence! Yummy!!

  27. Kayleigh

I made these using a Duncan Hines cake mix because I had it on hand. The batter was really dry and some of the powder wasn’t mixed in, so I added 2 more Tbs of melted butter. The batter seemed ok, but when the cookies baked they must have absorbed all the powdered sugar! They still tasted great though! I’ll have to try these again with the right cake mix 😊
