My Family’s Favorite Sherry Poppy Seed Bundt Cake
Need a unique and delicious cake idea?!
If there’s an occasion that calls for an insanely delicious gooey cake, this Sherry Poppy Seed Bundt Cake is it! Today I’m sharing a cherished cake recipe from my family. And while it’s perfect for any special occasion, it’s still simple enough for a weeknight treat.
This cake is an oldie but a goodie!
Meet the famous Sherry Poppy Seed Bundt Cake, recipe courtesy of my Aunt Lisa. It has been requested for generations of family gatherings over the years – birthdays, every holiday, and even dyed green for St. Patty’s Day!
It’s a moist cake that features a buttery sweet glaze that’s to die for! I love that it’s an easy boxed yellow cake with pudding mix, yet tastes like it comes from a fancy bakery. If you like rum cake, this is a little similar but uses a sweet Sherry wine.
Hip Tips:
-
- Cream Sherry wine is found with the sweet wines in the grocery store, and it’s what makes this cake taste special. Just buy the least expensive bottle. Don’t use cooking sherry, which is completely different.
-
- Prefer zero alcohol? Substitute the sherry with pineapple juice.
-
- I’ve served this cake with a simple powdered sugar dusting for a lighter coffee cake.
-
- I’ve also served this cake with a delicious butter/sherry glaze that makes it over the top amazing. It’s really fantastic and rich.

Awesome! My family makes a similar one with amaretto (almond or vanilla extract works in a pinch). Thanks!!
Oh that sounds yum too!
Wonder what it would taste like made with Kalua?
I want to make this, i have all the ingredients except the poppy seeds. Where do i buy them. Walmart and my local grocery store do not have them. I can order on amazon i guess
Oh they can be usually be found with the spices in your local grocery store or big box type store.
Do you think this would work without the poppy seeds? Looks so good!
Yes i think so! Thanks so much <3
I love when Hip2Save posts these unique recipes! I am still making the cream cheese and jam tarts recipe from years ago.
Oh my gosh those are awesome too! Thanks Gwen, that made my day.
Sounds amazing! Thank you for sharing your family recipes with us!
You’re very welcome!
This sounds awesome. We don’t do alcohol in our house so thank you for the pineapple juice option! Yum!
Sure! 😉 Enjoy!
That sounds delicious!! I wish I wasn’t trying to cut my sugar intake. I’m saving the recipe anyways for when I get a craving. Thanks so much for sharing. That’s so nice of you!
Thanks and yes this is a once in while treat for sure! 👍❤️ You’re welcome!
Looks yummy Lina…Thanks 🙂
Sure Brindha!
If i dont have a bundt cake pan can i do this in cupcakes or 9*13 pan or 8*8 pan if so what time and temp for each please?
Here’s a handy conversion chart I found. In general you’ll have to watch for doneness. Hope this helps! https://www.thespruceeats.com/cake-baking-times-per-pan-305281
My best friend has been making this cake for over 20 years. She called it “wine cake”, but hers didn’t include poppy seeds. This is a wonderful recipe and taste great with coffee. She also give them away as mini bundt cakes as Christmas gifts. Just like “Nothing bundt cakes”, but I think hers taste better.
Oh fun! I want to try mini bundt cakes now!
Looks so yummy! My parents always made a chocolate chocolate chip cake that doctors up a box of devils food cake mix with sour cream and chocolate chips and it’s AWESOME. I will have to give this a shot!
Oh that sounds yum! Thanks Jen!
Yum! Gonna try this thanks!
Lina-is the cake box size in this recipe correct? I can’t find an 18 oz box of yellow cake mix in the grocery stores, only 15.25 oz. Has anyone tried to make this recipe with the 15.25 oz size or had any luck finding the larger size anywhere? Thanks!
I think each brand may be diff or they change over the years. You can use the 15.25! I’ll note that in recipe.
Thanks Lina- I can’t wait to make this!
I cant find Cream sherry, looked in some grocery stores and even on, do you have any suggestions Would a liquor store carry it? I live in Montana
Oh darn! I found in my Kroger with the sweet wine, but did have to have someone help direct me. Yes I bet liquor stores would! Sorry you’re not having luck,
Thank you
You are a life saver. I have had this recipe for years. Lost my recipe!!!! Just by chance searched web and there you were. I remembered all ingredients just couldn’t remember amounts. Thank you for posting.
Sooooooo…. Keeping a long story short, I think this may be THE recipe my mom, and her mom, made for us and as neighbor gifts every single year.
To verify, was this from a recipe/idea (and obviously joint marketing effort) in a wome s or something magazine from the 50’s or 60’s? The one my grand ma had originally cut out cane from the far right edge of the right page.
Could you met me know?
Lina said her aunt introduced this recipe to our family in the 80s and it’s just been known as the “good poppyseed cake” for family gatherings and holidays – It could have been in a magazine though!
