Calling all fellow popcorn addicts! Did you know that you can easily make your own popcorn at home in your microwave using just 3 ingredients and a paper sack? Yep, it is that simple and so darn good (and so much healthier than the traditional microwave packets!).

DIY Microwave Popcorn
Ingredients:
1/3 cup popping corn
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon coconut oil, or butter
Directions:
Place corn in a paper sack along with oil and salt. Fold sack closed. Place in microwave for about 3 minutes until you hear kernels stop popping a few seconds apart. Take out, shake, and enjoy! 🙂
What’s your favorite way to flavor popcorn? Do you go with the traditional salt or something different?

It’s amazing how easy it is to make your own microwave popcorn.
Thanks! Will have to try.
This is SO quick easy and delicious..I’ve been doing it this way for a while now and I can’t stand the taste of store bought microwave popcorn anymore homemade just taste sooo much better.
I also never buy box popcorn, yuck!! Once you start making it homemade you can’t go back! I usually make on the stove;-) However, you can also make this in the microwave by placing you ingredients in a glass bowl and place a plate over it (I don’t buy paper bags). This is my healthy go to snack, when I want salty crunch!
Thanks for the tip! I was wondering if you could do it in a bag-less way. 🙂
Thanks for sharing. I usually burn our popcorn a bit when I pop it on the stove. I’ll try this next time. No extra dishes (or bags) to buy – sounds great.
Thanks Colin-I love your videos!! We will definitely be trying this. It really looks easy!
It is super easy and glad to hear you are enjoying the videos! 🙂
I use this idea in my weight loss class at the free clinic. We tried jalapeno cheddar seasoning (by the popcorn at Wal-Mart, about $2) & just sprayed the popcorn with Pam. Quick, easy, yummy & inexpensive.
I know exactly what you’re talking about–Kernel Season’s! My daughter loves the white cheddar and I was surprised by all the other flavors they have. Wondering if anyone has tried the other flavors?
We have Kettle Corn, Ranch and Parmesan Garlic. I like them all but our family favorite is the Kettle Corn:)
how do you make the kettle corn?
No sweet tooth here–I like both the ranch and parm garlic.
LOVE IT! Bring on the popcorn… Mama has a craving 🙂
This Mama always has a craving! 😉
That’s how I always make mine! I love that it’s inexpensive, healthy, and easy to make and my daughters love that its delicious!
I want to start doing this what’s a good price for the popcorn?
I pay $1.79 for a large bag of kernels that will last a LONG time!!
At our more affordable grocery store market basket the store brand is 1.50 for 2lbs
This looks awesome! I definitely need to start making this. Where does everyone get their popping corn? Store bought or online?
I buy mine at the grocery store. It will be in the same section as microwaveable popcorn bags. It is so much cheaper! Plus if you want a healthier version you can skip the salt and butter. Just the kernels and paper bag is all you need! Just be careful not to over cook the popcorn as without the butter it can catch fire easier. 🙂
Walmart also sells popping corn, at my store it is on the top shelf above all the microwave popcorn, next to the seasonings. They have the Great Value brand which is usually around $1.00 and then they have the Orville Rendenbacher which comes in a plastic jar for a couple of dollars. Also if you have olive oil in a sprayer that also taste good with some sea salt. If you don’t have an oil sprayer, I suggest buying one, I love having the ability to spray olive oil without the chemical propellants.
Super! I’m going to try this. I hate how unhealthy microwave popcorn is, so I’ve stopped eating it.
Like, no way! I’m gonna try this, that boxed stuffed leaves such a film of grease in your mouth and I hate taking out the hot air popper. Thanks for sharing Collin 🙂
You are so welcome!
Where does everyone get their popcorn from? I buy the bulk bag from fleet farm 9.99 for 12.5 pounds and dump it into an empty protein powder pail that I cleaned out! Cheapest I have found here in western Wisconsin…
.05 an oz
We opt for organic kernels to avoid GMO corn, and order ours from Amazon. I got some last year at a good price and STILL have lots leftover. A little goes a long way 🙂
I had no idea! I’m excited to try this!
This is such a great idea. Healthy because you are controlling the fat and salt. Microwave popcorn is very unhealthy. Please see following information I read online:
“There is a chemical used in the nonstick coating on the inside of the popcorn bags that decomposes, producing a compound called perfluorooctanoic acid. This chemical has been associated with increased risk of certain cancers, including liver and prostate cancer.”
This info has been around a long time they just don’t tell enough people about it..people die of ‘popcorn lung’ because of it.
I love making popcorn this way. I don’t even put any oil or butter in with it and mine comes out great!! You can get brown bags at dollar tree!
Same here! We skip the butter and salt as well!
HA HA! 10 second rule! Ours was always 5! My son just did his science fair project on it! So funny…thanks for keeping it real!
Here is an even easier way to do it. No bags needed! https://www.everythingbutthe.com/2011/09/08/blow-your-mind-microwave-popcorn/
Would be even better with non gmo corn. I know most corn is gmo now…. Anyone know wheeee I could get some?
Chucks sells non GMO. I forget the price but worth it!..
I don’t know where Chucks is, I thought all corn was now GMO, 100% of it???
Check out Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods. No GMO for us either.
Most of the research I’ve done says that even if there is GMO free corn, there is a high probability of cross-pollination. So even if you’re buying a labeled “GMO Free Popcorn kernel”, there’s still a slight chance it’s not 100% free of GMOs. Pretty scary!
we get our organic kernels from Amazon.
Just made it for the kiddos while we are snowed in….THANKS!!! I always make it on the stove..now I wont have to wash a pot!! Woot!!!
Yay!! And congrats on successfully making a batch! 😀
This is genius! Great idea! Thanks! I love sweet & salty-
I loooove my popcorn popper (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00005IBXK/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00005IBXK&linkCode=as2&tag=wwwhip2saveco-20). You don’t need any oil and almost every kernel pops! Perfect popcorn every time! Just hit it with a mist (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005DSEWV2/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B005DSEWV2&linkCode=as2&tag=wwwhip2saveco-20) of oil and a little seasoning, and it’s good to go!
Oh, and plain, salted leftover popcorn is great as cereal or you can grind it up and make popcorn bread. Yum. An excellent whole grain!
Thank you sooooo much! for sharing.my kids and hubby are also addicted to popcorn.ill start doing it this way 🙂
You’re welcome!
I cannot wait to try this! One of my FAVORITE snacks is salted popcorn with hot chocolate! YUMM-O! 🙂
We have been doing this for a few months! We love it!!!
Yes!yum! We go to our local farm where they give the kids free ears of corn ready for popping. My boys think its so cool.
Love this video Collin! My hubby actually bought me a real popcorn machine about 8 years ago and I would never eat prepackaged microwave bagged popcorn ever again! Obviously the popcorn maker was expensive ($200) but it was a Christmas gift and we have made, enjoyed and given away so much popcorn it was definitely worth it! I love that you have a cheaper way to make your own, healthy popcorn right at home! So quick and easy. The best thing with our popcorn machine is the flavor seasonings you can buy – white cheddar, cajun, bacon cheddar, chocolate, the list goes on and on. One tip for seasoning a batch of popcorn…it needs to have a little extra oil so that the seasoning sticks, but my hubby has found if he puts it in those big empty plastic containers (like the ones you buy pretzels/animal crackers in at Costco) you can get the popcorn rolling and coated evenly inside. Just shake it up! Plus if you make a big batch you can save some for later! A great, yummy snack for family movie night! Thanks Collin for all you do!
🙂
My neighbor makes her popcorn like this and got me hooked on it! So good, and so easy!
I just bought the coconut you posted last week so I’m super excited to try this tonight.thanks Colin!!
You’re welcome!! 🙂
*oil
I get my popcorn kernels from the produce section. The bags are cheaper than the kernels found with the microwave popcorn! The brand I use is Captain Willie’s.
Question for Lina…love your posts and your pictures! What kind of camera do you have? I’m desperate for a new one and looking for a good investment. thanks!
Thanks! I have a Nikon D5100 and shoot food and close ups with a 50mm and 35mm lenses.
THanks for the info! You’re a great shot!
Hahaha 10 second rule!!! Collin you are to funny. I LOVE popcorn!!! Thanks for the tips gonna try this very, very soon. 🙂
Does anyone know how to get that movie theater super buttery flavor without squirting the popcorn with that yellow goo or seasoning it with Flavacol? I love movie theater popcorn with lots of extra has-to-be-super-fake-and-bad-for-me yellow stuff but feel pretty ‘take it or leave it’ about any of the stove top or microwave varieties I’ve tried.
We use red palm oil instead of butter at times. You can do a search on-line to see the health benefits. I order ours from amazon.
Love making popcorn in the stove at home!! Will have to try this option! 🙂
This fall I noticed bags of popcorn kernels at Aldi. I do not remember the exact price, but perhaps around $1.69? I stocked up and bought about 5 bags knowing it was a cheaper price than the bigger grocery stores around me. I pop popcorn often in a Whirley Pop metal pan for the stove too! My kids never tire of homemade warm and fresh popcorn and I love that it is so inexpensive!
I love Orville Reddenbacker’s popcorn, know it is more expensive, but what a difference in how it pops and tastes. My hubby did a service call for an elderly lady who was so appreciative she gave him a quart jar of popcorn that she got from her son who worked for them. Yes, there is a difference!
When I worked in the theater many moons ago and worked the concession stand, the only thing we did to make our wonderful popcorn buttered was to put fairly warm, good grade of butter drizzled throughout it. It varied with who was making it. 🙂 Boy, could I make some great popcorn for some very special people! We would get in trouble if the manager saw us putting extra butter in because it was expensive…but oh, so good! Is your mouth watering yet? 🙂
I did this for awhile but it became kind of a hassle (plus I hate buying brown bags like that only to throw them out). My husband and I bought a cheap (under$20) airpopper thing at Target and we use it all the time. We love it.
OMG!!!! This is way too easy!!! love ya colin!
I had no idea. Soooo exciting:)!!
I’ve done this for years. It works great, but make sure you get the top on really good and listen for it to stop popping. Don’t use the automated popcorn button on your microwave or it might burn. You can also drizzle a little olive oil (less than 1/2 teaspoon, if you don’t like coconut oil).
Brilliant! Who knew!! I tried it tonight just as you described and it worked like a charm.. So much cheaper and better for you than store bought microwave and no pots or equipment to clean up..win, win! Thanks Collin!
Genius
OK inquiring minds wanna know, Collin are you Lina, or Lina are you Collin? I see a video and I see Lina’s instructions. I’ve been wondering why we never see videos of Lina but maybe she’s really Collin??? Ok, now even I’ve confused:)! Love the popcorn idea, have to make this soon cause I love popcorn too!! Thanks!
Ha! Yes Collin did the video and I did the photos and written instructions 🙂 My role is to photograph and post recipes and Diy type projects as part of the Hip2Save team 🙂
Does Walmart sell the coconut oil? I am getting hungry for some popcorn! Yum Yum!
Mine does, its located with the Crisco on the baking aisle.
i cant wait to try this out, but with butter, im not a coconut person yuck!
Silly question…Does coconut oil taste like coconuts? And where can I buy some for a good price?
I’m wondering the same thing about the taste! I’ve seen a large jar at Sam’s Club for $9. That might be regional though
I was wondering the same thing! 🙂
No, it doesn’t taste like coconuts. Kind of nutty flavor.
I’ve heard that you can not use brown bag in a microwave, but I don’t know if it’s true :/
I used this method all the time, but my microwave shorted the last time and caught the bag on fire within the first 15 seconds. Kinda scared to do it in the new one now lol
LOL! You are so silly sometimes! Love it and thanks for all you do!
