“I spent 6 months visiting furniture stores, sitting on couches, and comparing prices. To boot, I have 4 kids, 2 cats, and a dog who are all HARD on furniture. Spending a fortune on a couch literally made me feel sick. We finally went to IKEA and sat on the KIVIK. It’s comfortable, sturdy and I was sold on the idea that I could wash covers. It doesn’t hurt that it’s a pretty good looking couch, too.
The hardest part of the assembly was unboxing and finding room for all the pieces and getting the covers on the cushions – my husband and I spent less than 2 hours on it. The instructions were clear and easy to follow. If you’re stressed about bringing a couch into chaos, this one is a great value!”

“I love this sofa! I have bought sofas in the past costing well over $1,000 and they become worn or lumpy over time. This IKEA sofa is comfortable, washable down to the cushion covers (not just the slipcovers), and is all around a great purchase. Instead of, yet again, replacing my leather sofa which had been ruined in a spill, I decided to go with 2 of these and place them in an ‘L’ formation in our family room. I have had them for two years and they have been sat on, spilled on, slept on, washed and washed again and still look great! I would buy these again in a heartbeat and never ever will I again go to fine furniture stores to overpay for sofas that don’t stand the test of time. Thanks, IKEA!”

“We bought this a few months ago for my son’s room to provide seating and a sleeping area for when his friends come over and so far it’s been great! It’s very comfortable as a sofa and works wonderfully as a bed, too!
It’s lightweight so moving to vacuum and clean the floor underneath is super easy. Additionally, the fabric has been a dream. We vacuum it regularly and if anything is dropped on it, a damp cloth has done the trick. We’ve gotten away with still no stains and I’m totally impressed considering it’s used by a 13-year-old and friends!”

Did you see these highly-rated and super affordable TV stands from IKEA that we love?
We have the Ektorp. I love it! It’s comfortable, easy to remove covers to clean ( kids! ) & I can switch out my covers when I want to change it up a bit! Best part – great price!
Thank you for your comment! I’ve been looking at the Ektorp and wondered why it wasn’t listed!
SWEET! I love the idea of changing things up and being able to easily clean when necessary! Thanks for sharing with us, Heather!
We have the Ektorp love seat. We love it! We’ve had it for several years. Very comfortable. Still looks new. No problems. Highly recommend.
My son has had 2 Ektorp sofas. Each one I had to constantly move the cushions back every time I got up. They need Velcro to keep them in place.
Thanks for the helpful warning! Good to know!
I have the extorp couch and I love it! I bought it used and used rit dye to change the color of the slipcover. I’ve had it for several years and love that it’s washable. The perfect couch to have with young kids!
Oh wow! What a great idea, Meg! Happy to hear how well it has been holding up for you through the years! Thanks a ton for taking a moment to comment.
Does anyone have the FRIHETEN? I want one with storage and the bed is a nice bonus. I’m wondering if anyone has had a good/bad experience with it?
I have the https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/friheten-sleeper-sectional-3-seat-w-storage-hyllie-dark-gray-s59297570/
It’s a great couch. We bought a foam mattress topper to make the bed less firm. I got mine used on Craig’s List. It’s been a great couch for us–we host a lot of people. Not the most comfortable couch in the world BUT I LOVE the storage space (that is where we keep the bedding).
I used to have a Manstad, which looks almost identical to the Frihiten. It was definitely a smart piece of furniture. It wasn’t the most comfortable for a couch or bed, in my opinion, but it was firm and held its shape over the several years we had it. The storage space was huge and absolutely amazing to have and the versatility to convert to a bed was also handy. The couch was an absolute beast to move, though. I like to rearrange furniture from time to time and it definitely was not a quick and easy task with that couch!
We have had the frieheten for almost 1.5 yrs now in grey. the fabric is very poor quality and started linting, discoloring within 3 months of use. we didnt even use it that much. Also we put sheets when guests slept but everyone complains it gets very hot sleeping on it which I would attribute to the fabric maybe. We wouldnt recommend.
Homereseve.com is one of the best places I bought couches and sectionals from
Every seat and ottoman has built in storage
Comes with a warranty and you can try a chair to see if you like it for 30 days
When you get tired of the color or a piece gets messed up you can buy replacement fabric
If a cushion gets torn up it can be replaced
Sectional are modular you can add pieces or rearrange them
We have a dark gray Kivik sofa I found on Facebook marketplace for only $150!! It’s a little worn (some pilling and cushions sag kit a bit) but not bad for used, and VERY comfy. I’ve even slept on it and it’s great!
Hi, can anyone attest to IKEA couches? We purchased a wooden bed with storage drawers and it literally only last THREE MONTHS!! I try to steer clear of IKEA but am in desperate need of a couch.
We purchased the EKTORP couch, loveseat and chair in 2006 and we still use them every day. The back cushions aren’t quite as fluffy as they used to be, but a great price to last 13 years and 3 moves (one out of state.)
I have the Kivik and love it. It’s comfy and I love the wide arm rests. The lady at Ikea said the arm rests were made to double as a seat as well. I wouldn’t recommend the lighter color covers if you have dogs and kids though.
I can and would recommend the Friheten Sectional! We liked our original so much, and it’s withstood our three sons so well that we bought a second one! (Just buy a dark color if you have kids!)
We have the LANDSKRONA in black leather and really like it!
I have an ektorp sofa (with sofa bed) that I have had for nearly 20 YEARS! The thing won’t die 😉 so I can get a replacement! I have been looking for a replacement for years just for something new, but as much as I want a different sofa…I haven’t been able to find anything that would be better even if I double the price! I have purchased a few covers over the years (and i tried to dye a white replacement cover in a huge jacuzzi bathtub…would not recommend! Even with super hot water the dye wasn’t even in color because it needed a larger tub…small pool maybe LOL ) I have purchased a better (still terrible 😉 ) sofa-bed mattress, and parts have come off (metal tension rods, chunks of pressed wood from the inside of the hide-a-bed area) but the thing still remains in good shape! FYI* I have three, rough-on-furniture boys, a full-sized dog, and have moved 3 times…there is no sofa more worth your money!!! Just decide if you want it in your life forever before you buy it! haha *We also have the ektorp storage ottoman and use it to store bedding. The washable covers in the heavy denim-like fabric are the key – they are so durable and machine washable! And there are tons of people online who sell custom covers for all ikea sofas if you don’t mind paying $$$.
Talk about an amazing piece of furniture, Meejay! You may have just talked me into the ektorp sofa!
LOVE our KIVIK!!! We got the sofa with the chaise in blue. I love being able to connect the pieces to make a sectional or keep them separate….im always rearranging furniture so its nice to have that flexibility. Also love that all the fabric is machine washable!! 2 years later…with 3 kids and a dog…and it still looks great. Its held up so much better than the more expensive sectional we had before….I’m not sure I’ll ever buy a sofa any where else!!
Perfect post! Thank-you!
PS, i like the Klippan because a lot of my friends and family have shorter legs and it has a shallower seat depth that is more comfortable for smaller frames. Also, we have the Kramfors which isn’t at ikea right now, but the thing is a sturdy beast! We bought it on craigslist years ago and the kids basically use it for gymnastics on rainy days and it has held up amazingly! The only wear on it is that cushions need to be restitched a bit in a couple of places (put that on my to-do list;) It looks classy, has room for the roomba to easily roll underneath, doesn’t need any fuss with covers, and wipes clean fast. It is comfortable for napping too:)
We own two of the Friheten sectionals and LOOOOOVE them! Comfort, style, & multi-function (storage + pull-out bed), it’s the best of all worlds! I always recommend them, and friend who come over and see them are always impressed!
The Hendricks sofa, designed by Matthew Long in 2014, is a bestseller at Habitat. It has been for a while; people love it because of its low profile, which provides the illusion of extra space even in low-ceilinged rooms. It also boasts generous, wide arms on which you can balance trays, laptops, children’s books and anything else you might want within close proximity as you lounge. The frame covers are removable and washable (handy for unwelcome spills) and the button detailing provides an extra sense of plushness. It’s handmade in Italy, and is available in 35 different finishes and colourways including velvet, fabric and leather – but our top pick for 2018 has to be the emerald-green velvet. It offsets darker wood pieces such as mahogany perfectly, and looks great against white walls.
Why didn’t you do a review on IKEA’s Ektorp sofa? It has good reviews on their website but I’d like to know what you think before I buy it, which I’m seriously considering. Thanks.
We’ve had our Kivik sectional for about 5 years and have been super happy. The ottoman has a huge amount of storage. It’s survived two young kids and two dogs, any overnight guests want to sleep on the couch! It’s big enough that two of my in-laws slept on it at the same time in different directions. My only complaint is that the replacement covers are crazy expensive. I wanted to refresh the covers and possibly change the color to shake things up but it was too cost prohibitive.
