This is a Genius Idea for Recycling Empty Gift Cards
Have empty gift cards laying around?
Don’t toss them in the trash! Instead, consider recycling them and turning them into a highly used guitar-playing accessory! 🎸 Hip2Save reader, Contessa, found an easy and inexpensive way to repurpose the used-up gift cards from her family and friends… and we think it’s such a fun and frugal idea! It’s great for the environment, too!
Don’t just throw your gift cards in the trash! All of my friends and family save their empty gift cards for me and we recycle them by making guitar picks using a guitar punch I bought off Amazon for less than $20!
Especially right after Christmas, everyone has a gift card or two that they got over the holidays and are using up. Instead of throwing them away, it’s a great way to recycle them by turning them into guitar picks. Having four guitar players in the house who always lose their picks, these are cheap replacements!
What a great DIY gift idea for guitar players, too!
*As always, if you’re going to use a gift card, make sure that there isn’t a remaining balance on it before cutting it up!

I use old gift cards as stone scrapers and pan scrapers like the pamper chef ones
I keep a couple in car as an ice scraper for my car windows.
They are the BEST for frosty car windows! Been doing this for years π
Interesting idea.
Cute idea! Thanks for posting!
Great idea! You can extend that idea to make games for kids with the right punch/cutout for a game board. The kids can also play pretend shopping with gift cards.
I trim the used gift cards to let them use as pretend ones so I know they don’t have the good ones.
My kids take them for their play kitchen/register or the youngest hoards GCs in her purse (DH says just like her mother lol). I do make sure to put a π« mark in Sharpie on the front just in case!
I got my husband this a few years ago because he was always losing his guitar pics. He still says itβs the best gift he ever got. I also have a million guitar pics all over the house now lol
How cool! Glad to hear how much he has liked it! I just ordered one for my daughter. She currently takes guitar lessons and I think she would LOVE it too! Thanks so much for commenting!
my daughters music teacher does this and gives them to the kids when they are the “rock star” i thought it was a unique thing!
That’s awesome! I agree! SO unique!
My husband makes beautiful junk art pictures (painting + junk applied) using used gift cards, broken toys, game pieces, tech cords, golf tees etc. I love all the wonderful up-cycling was ideas; keep them coming!
I love my pick punch! If you’ve got a Cricut, old gift cards are great for scraping the transfer paper for vinyl application too. We’ve used a couple from our Disney trips (I always have at least one that’s a special design that is reminiscent of the trip) and print a photo for the back of it, hole punch and ta-da. Memory photo ornament!
Too cute! Thanks for the helpful suggestion!
My brother has been making guitar picks from old gift cards for years! π
Hardrock Resorts will make your room key into guitar picks at the front desk when you’re done, too.
