It’s Official: Target Ends Competitor Price Matching
We’ve got everything you need to know about Target’s price match policy!
Have you heard the news? Target recently updated its price match policy to only allow customers to match their in-store, online, or app prices, including Target Plus items from 3rd party sellers.
This change comes less than a year after Target already limited its once generous price match policy to only include online prices from Amazon and Walmart.com. This was a huge change from the prior Target policy, which allowed price matching from nearly 30 competitors!
Customers can ask for a price match at the time of checkout or at Guest Services, for up to 14 days from the date of purchase.
Here’s how to price match at Target:
Store purchase: Stop by a store and bring proof of the Target price you want to match (screenshots or pictures don’t count). For past purchases (up to 14 days), also bring the original receipt.
Online purchase: Chat online or call guest services at 1-800-591-3869 and have the current price you want to match ready. For past purchases (up to 14 days), also have your order number and item information ready.
Here’s what qualifies for a price match at Target…
- You can match Target.com prices on in-store Target purchases and vice versa with in-store Target prices for Target.com purchases.
- The item has to be completely identical, including brand name, size, weight, color, quantity, and model number.
- Target must also be able to fact-check the price you’re showing and validate that the price is valid at the time of match.
- If matching a Target Circle deal, the member must sign in, sign up, or enter their mobile number at checkout.
- When price matching with the Target app, the Target app must be showing the price of the current store location.
- Original receipts, physical or digital, or packing slips are required for price adjustments up to 14 days after purchase.
- Target Plus items purchased from a Target Plus Partner can be matched from Target.com.
And now, for the exclusions to Target’s Price Match policy:
Unfortunately, price match of items sold by Target.com or prices through the Target app are not available in Alaska and Hawaii.
- In-store price matches from other Target stores are excluded.
- Target items cannot be price matched to Target Plus items.
- You cannot match clearance, closeout, liquidation sales, damaged, used, open package, refurbished, pre-owned, or rent/lease to own items, discount on total store or site purchase, deals that require a minimum purchase, non-branded item, or pricing due to typographical errors.
- All credit card offers, service offers, bundled offers, sales tax promotions, free items, rebates, or mail-in offers.
- Mobile phone services/plans, product services (warranties, assembly, etc.), clinic and pharmacy purchases and offers, or pre-order items are excluded.
- Target Circle Bonuses, gift card offers, registry completion coupons, and Target coupons cannot be combined with price match. Manufacturer coupons will be applied after a price match is made, for in-store purchases only.

Target.com is frequently cheaper than in my local Target store’s price on identical items — but to track it while shopping inside the store, you MUST NOT connect to the Target guest wifi and MUST turn-off location services for the Target app. Basically, if your phone knows you’re in a Target store, it may serve up the store prices, not the cheaper online prices.
