What laws affect the hiring of younger teens?
According to the Fair Labor Standards Act, 14 is the minimum hiring age for non-agricultural employment, with limits on the number of hours minors can work and the types of jobs they can perform.
For 14 and 15-year-old employees specifically, ALL work must be performed outside of school hours, and they may not work:
- More than 3 hours on a school day, including Fridays.
- Over 18 hours per week when school is in session.
- More than 8 hours per day when school is not in session.
- More than 40 hours per week when school is not in session.
- Before 7 AM or after 7 PM on any day, except June 1st through Labor Day, when night-time work hours are extended to 9 PM.
Fortunately, many great summer jobs for teens hire specifically for periods when your child can work. Lifeguards and summer camp counselors are two examples of seasonal jobs that hire teens.
In some states, for jobs that do hire young teens, they may need to obtain a work permit to seek employment. The best way to determine if they must complete this step is by consulting with their school’s guidance office or your state’s Department of Labor.
Although some exceptions may apply, teens must generally be paid the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour (but this will depend on what they do and where they work).

We are a soccer family and since we were spending our lives on the fields we figured, why not?! We were already out there, it was convenient and fully portable.
My eldest (now 19) went out of state and could take his certification with him and referee on his college campus. My next eldest (now 16) decided that certifying as a lifeguard offered a regular schedule and was more lucrative. He became a lifeguard at 15 and was hired by the city in which we live. He is now a year-round employee, can earn sick time, and additional certifications and licenses are covered as well. Additionally, upon turning 18, if he attends a local college and remains employed by the same municipality, the city will reimburse his school fees. If he chooses to head out of state for college, he can apply at his campus pool for lifeguarding.

Many of these businesses say they will hire at 14 or 15, but won’t actually unless you know a manager/owner. Not to say they shouldn’t apply, but keep realistic expectations. In my area they likely won’t even receive a response for their application.

Well yes however McDonald’s will hire at 14 if you have an relative that works there also they start to hire at age 15,18 hours a week only weekends if under age 16. 40 hour no overtime when school is not in session.
However Publix rarely hire part-time so have fun getting a job there.

I was just talking about this with my almost 18 year old. Her and her friends don’t have jobs. Some have tried, but it seems like businesses in Los Angeles give those jobs to adults. I think it all comes down to who you know.

I started Safeway in Seattle at age 15.
As a parent to any business speaking up for your child is a must. Especially when a child is new to the work field you wouldn’t want your child being taking advantage of….. children see money and that’s not healthy. Knowing the value and experience of the dollar is important. A child can start they own small business simple things like baby sitting, dog walkers, yard attendants or even picking up small kids after school. Teens may not know there rights as teen employees. We do have dishonest people in the work force even as an adult I witness that. Parents stay involved with your children.
Playing middle man here. I think it’s important to be involved, 100%. But I also see how children do not learn independence because their parent(s) usually don’t foster that for them and try to remain in control. It’s good to have Mama Bear (or whoever) in your corner, but they also need to learn and will not learn if everything is done for them.
Essentially what I’m saying is … teach your kids these things that you mention and then it’s a lot easier to keep an eye from the distance rather than feel the need to micromanage every aspect of their lives.

I know of a developement that hired kids on “the next door” app.
They hired them to mulch and weed. All showed up for 1 day and would not show up the next to finish the work.
I worked for companies who hired kids. They did not show up for bad weather and such.
I would not hire them. Liability problems and no shows.
People have to give kids a chance to grow and mature. They won’t learn unless they make a mistake. I think if they have respect, Morals, and are dependable they can learn the rest. Some kids don’t have good role models and just want to do better but don’t know better, when you have people who won’t give them a chance it’s easy for them to give up. I pray any child who wants to work they find a company to except them and grow in …good luck kiddos, you got this, don’t give up, last but not least be your self. If you have to take some trainings before hand do that as well

animal shelters do not pay, it is purely volunteer work. you need to be 16 to be there without a guardian. volunteer work hours do look good on college resumes though

Here’s a tip for y’all.
Usually, big companies won’t hire 14/15 year olds and have very strict rules, you would want to look for a single place (Not a company, just one location), you can discuss with their manager and they’re likely to be more flexible, look at stores at your local mall, they might have some of those.
To the kids who really want to work, don’t give up someone will give you a chance. If you have to do some trainings before hand do that as well so that you are qualified for the job. If you are in RVA sign up for the mayors youth academy, awesome program that pays well and you get all types of experience with different companies plus they will hire you after the summer is over if you do very well. YOU GOT THIS, BE PATIENT, AND DONT GIVE UP .
The minimum age 14 years old is right. But here in PA children can start working at Golf Clubs starting 12 years old, caddying, i.e., carrying the heavy golf bags. Shame on the legislators who are the members of those clubs. It’s is true that there are 12 years old children who look like they are already 15-16 at that age, but others at age 12 look like they are 9-10 years old. PA laws need to change to start everybody at 14 years, no exceptions!!!
My daughter really wanted to work at this age but could not get hired due to lack of experience. She took her food handlers certification (super easy) and was able to add that to her skills and it put her over the edge for the job and was hired. Just an idea
In addition to a lack of experience, teens sometimes lack any adult references (not family) that could give them an edge when applying for a job. One way to develop references is to get involved in clubs at school, or volunteer for neighbors, church, a non-profit charity, a summer camp, etc. If you show up, work hard, and have a good attitude, it is extremely likely that your teacher/club advisor, your pastor or church group, your neighbor, etc. would be willing to be listed as a reference on a job application. When my son was 12, I had him volunteering at my office for filing and cleaning up the filing room, as well as volunteering at a charity 5k run to hand out water bottles to the runners. At 13 and 14 he has been a CIT (counselor in training) at a summer camp, and has volunteered to help mulch a memorial garden near home. I am hoping that next summer when he is 15, he can use these experiences to show that he is a reliable worker and use the adults that he has worked with as references , to help him get a job. My son is 15 and refs for the YMCA. He asked his coaches from school and AAU to be his references. He had volunteered coaching younger kids, so he put that for his job experience. I only let him work Saturday mornings, because his first job is getting good grades in school, and he plays basketball year round.

Market Basket supermarket is in four New England states (not CT or VT yet) and they hire 14 and 15-year-olds. I see a lot of young people working there. They are family owned and known to be very good to their employees. Recently voted as the #3 supermarket chain in America! They open two or three new stores a year and are now in 60+ locations.

14 is just too young for me unless it’s some type of program with other kids working and someone who is actually providing supervision.
In my area, a place that ALWAYS hires 14 year olds- the elementary school. Fourteen year olds can clean the elementary school in the afternoon.

The YMCAs in our area hire lots of teenagers especially in the summer for camps, childwatch, and lifeguards. The ones here will allow you to apply as a lifeguard then get the training (paid) if you are not certified yet. All 3 of my kids have been YMCA lifeguards and love it.

My first job was at age 15, I worked for Domino’s Pizza answering phones(since legally I wasn’t allowed to get food out of the oven). This was back in 2002. I eventually went on to become the store manager at 19.
So check the local pizza places around where you live as well

Nannies should not required to have a level, but many parents do look for some sort of training in the sphere of kids.
The Culvers in my area absolutely hires young teens. My neighbors kid started there at 14.

Polo clubs around me hire 14 & 15 yr olds to fill divots. My kids had their older friends refer them into an Erickson Living (nat’l company) retirement community near us and were hired once they were 3 months shy of 15.

Also look into nursing homes in your area. My 16 year olds were able to get part-time kitchen jobs in nursing homes and the pay was better than local restaurants.

So my teen makes a dollar more per hour than I do- no experience 😭 I work at a licensed preschool with an associates and multiple credentials, for, 2 step TB screening, background check that took 3 weeks to run…them, take people’s money at the tourist area parking lot. I know a lot of other people may be in the same boat just trying to make payments on the Sienna and save for Disney someday. Just wanted to say I see you lol ..and keep saving $
I am 14 and struggle with finding a job, because most businesses just ghost me. I am qualified and the only place I have found jobs is with the local soccer association. And they pay amazing too! But, with the season ending, I cannot find a job! I applied to AMC, so let’s see how that goes!!!
Most YMCAs will hire lifeguards who are 15 and will train them. If you can swim 200 yards you can be trained. The training counts towards your work hours. In Maryland, our local YMCA is always looking for lifeguards. Most of the private pools around here also hire lifeguards at 15 but you would need to get certified on your own and that can be pricy.

Many YMCAs have a Counselor in Training (CIT) program over the summer for 13-17 year olds. It is not paid but there is also no cost. It’s a great resume builder, great way to network and get their feet wet into the expectations and responsibilities of the workforce. My 13 year old is finishing his second week and it’s been a great experience. He’ll have references and experience, I got free camp for two weeks!!
