Passing on this info in case it helps someone who is truly searching for the best swimwear. I am a swimsuit addict and have tried nearly everything. Please know this all comes from a midsize, curvy mom of four. I swim year round and spend most summer days that it isn’t raining at the pool. “Modest” isn’t really my thing, but support and comfort and swimwear that makes me feel great are. So here goes!
1. Summersalt is the poorest quality fabric of any suit I’ve ever owned, hands down. It is thin, the lining is not color matched and the edges roll so you’re constantly seeing the nude lining fabric. If you get something with thinner straps, the don’t stay put and constantly flip and twist. It is a shame, because the cut of their mid-rise bottoms is quite good.
2. Andie Swim! Not mentioned here, but this brand is EXCELLENT. I prefer two piece swimwear EXCEPT when I’m lap swimming, and their one-pieces are my absolute favorite. They hold up well. I’m about ready to replace my favorite basic one piece (the Tulum) because it’s starting to lose its shape a little after two years of swimming in chlorine 3-5 days a week (which is pretty impressive, I think, but I’m not a lap-suit aficionado). Read the reviews on their site and take their quiz, and you’ll find a suit that fits. (They also have great and accessible fit experts who will chat with you, I did that once!) Cons, for me, are that they’re mostly basic solids. I haven’t tried their two pieces yet, but I have four one-piece swimsuits from Andie. Watch for clearance colors!
3. I agree that Aerie suits are a great bang for your buck. However, I’ve had some difficulty fitting the higher waisted bottoms…they’re either too tight, or they’re baggy in my generous booty! The one pieces tend to run on the shorter side, so if you have a long torso, they seem to fit best. Biggest complaint is lack of adjustable straps and underwire cups in the tops. The ones I do have that are bra sized are very good, though.
5. Land’s End was my go-to for years, but recently have resulted in several returns and one suit (for lap swimming) that is too large in the shoulders. High quality material and great options for modest suits that will last; for someone who prefers a two piece, options are fewer.
6. Last but not least, Carve Designs. I’m honestly just going to stop trying other brands for two piece swimwear. This is the BEST material, the BEST fit, lots of mix and match and reversible options, one piece, tankini, bikini, rashguards, etc. I have a go-to combo (Camari top, Stinson bottom) and when I tell you they don’t budge, I mean it! I even surfed in a Carve bikini + rashguard last summer, and the bottoms never moved an inch. This brand is carried at REI and other similar stores that have outdoor gear, but their selection tends to be quite limited. It is very easy to find past season styles at deep discounts at a myriad of places (Amazon, Swim Outlet, REI, Backcountry, Sierra, 6pm, etc). They also have very cute matching board shorts, skirted swim bottoms, swim leggings, etc. Seriously, I get nothing from sharing this info other than the hope it helps somebody with the struggles I’ve had.
7. Honorable mention for J. Crew. They have really good tank and maillot suits and I like the basic underwire style of their 1993 (?) bikini tops. Cons for me are the straps could be wider and there is not much in between skimpy and high waisted full coverage bottoms (at least not that I’ve loved).
I’m very picky about how swimsuits fit and feel, I dislike feeling wet material against my body, and that is why I always wear two piece suits (bikini style, not tankini) when not swimming laps. I don’t struggle with body image much, so I really don’t care what people think about my saggy, overweight mom body as long as I feel comfortable and secure. I’ve tried many other brands, and I always feel like my boobs are falling out or like I can’t run around, jump in the pool with my kids, etc. without having a wardrobe malfunction.
For other non-modest options in addition to these, I always recommend O’Neill, Roxy, Billabong, Hobie, and in some pieces, Body Glove. They are made for being active and not just lying on the beach.
Thanks for sharing all of your suggestions and feedback on some swimsuit options that have worked well for you throughout the years! 💕 Great to hear you’ve found swimwear that is comfortable and supportive! 🤗
I also like to look at theSwimsuits4all website. It’s nice to be able to see so many styles all in one place. And they often have good coupons, –even H2S has had special coupons for this site in the past.
Thanks so much for the recommendation of where you enjoy shopping at, nldaadmin! 🤗
