Here are some fun Earth Day facts:

  • The first Earth Day was held on April 22, 1970.
  • Earth Day went global in 1990.
  • Earth Day now includes a wide range of Earth Day activities and events coordinated globally by EarthDay.org and was purposefully planned between spring break and final exams in the hope that college students would participate.
  • Approximately 1 BILLION people in more than 190 countries celebrate Earth Day every year.
  • Across the world, it’s also referred to as “International Mother Earth Day”.
  • There’s an official Earth Anthem song.

The facts are, one day isn’t nearly enough to celebrate Mother Earth and all she has to offer each of us.

No matter where you live, Earth Day is a day to find a new appreciation and open yourself to becoming more eco-friendly. So, we’re sharing some of our all-time favorites and most popular tips in honor of Earth Day so we can help you save money and the planet – now and for every day moving forward too.

Here are the top Earth Day activities or products you can buy to celebrate Earth Day 2023 and invest in our Earth for years to come:

1. Invest in a reusable water bottle to save on plastic.

Did you know that bottled water is ranked the #1 U.S. beverage by volume sold? According to the Container Recycling Institute“more than 60 million plastic bottles end up in landfills and incinerators every day – a total of about 22 billion last year.” 😳

That makes switching to a reusable water bottle a no-brainer! 🙌🏼

Luckily, I personally tested and rated 5 of the most popular water bottles after using them all for over 3 years! So if you’re in the market this Earth Day, make sure to check out which one will best suit your needs. I even included the BEST option for kids! 👍

2. Help save the oceans by using our favorite reusable straws.

Approximately 500 million plastic straws are used each day in America alone. It’s also been calculated that by 2050 there will be more weight in straws than fish in the oceans. 😱 It’s no wonder why many larger companies have made the switch to a no-straw policy years ago.

Straws are extremely harmful and even fatal to marine life due to getting stuck or ingested. Even worse, research from the National Library of Medicine found traces of plastic in sea salt, 94% of tap water, and shellfish. 🙁

If you’re looking to stop using plastic straws, we shared our favorite reusable straws to use, which ones to stay away from, and even shared more information on the damage plastic straws are doing. Make the switch now!

Want to help the oceans and marine life beyond Earth Day 2023?

3. Turn your trash into total treasure with our hacks this Earth Day.

Instead, check out my Hip sidekick Lina’s genius upcycling ideas you can do at home. From old candles, medicine bottles, unused shoe boxes, and so much more you can transform so many pieces this Earth Day!

4. You can ditch plastic wrap forever with these food wraps.

Bee’s Wraps are naturally antimicrobial, made from GOTS-certified organic cotton, sustainably sourced beeswax, organic jojoba oil, and tree resin. All of the ingredients combined create a malleable and easy-to-use food wrap that can be used over and over again. Perfect for packing lunches or storing leftovers! 🙌

After trying these reusable Bees Wraps I was sold. Plus, I knew I was making a significant difference for our planet on Earth Day and every other day during the year.

5. Stasher bags are a great alternative to using plastic too.

The number of plastic sandwich baggies I was frivolously using occurred to me when all 3 of my kiddos were in school. Every day, I was using at least 3 baggies per lunch! 😱 That’s 45 sandwich bags in just one week and not including the other bags I was using when it was convenient.

That’s about 4 boxes of these Ziploc sandwich bags per month! If I stayed on that track, I was projected to spend about $253.92 or more just on baggies each year that had a lifespan of fewer than 24 hours. 😳

We completely switched to Stasher Bags over three years ago and haven’t looked back. In fact, all of mine still look brand new and NONE of them have stained, ripped, or gone in the trash! 😱

They’re 100% silicone, easy to open and close, freezer and microwave-safe, and sous vide-safe. Plus, they’re even oven-ready and can even be thrown in the dishwasher for hassle-free cleaning! They’re endlessly reusable, extremely durable, and come in any size you need.

7. Earth Day is a great day to choose to make better choices when it comes to cleaning too.

Depending on what cleaners you’re using at home, they could be contributing to health problems according to the EPAThe Nest states that families, on average, are spending a whopping $600 every year for cleaning supplies. Not to mention, they’re likely horrible for the environment since many aren’t 100% biodegradable and contain chemicals.

Your home should be a safe place and not just on Earth Day. That’s why you should make the switch to cleaner and more eco-friendly cleaning products if you haven’t already.

When you make more conscious choices, it will ultimately be better for you, your family, and the planet. From effective toilet cleaners to game-changing laundry detergents safely clean your home with our top recommended natural cleaning products! Even better, we included a DIY version for every single one! 🙌🏻

Want just one effective cleaning product that does it ALL and is completely eco-friendly too?!

Even the most eco-friendly products need to be replaced. So regardless if you’ve found the cleanest of them all, we have a better solution to minimize your waste altogether AND it will cut your costs by at least 80%. 🙌🏼

Force of Nature is a federal EPA-registered disinfectant and sanitizer that NATURALLY kills 99.9% of germs, bacteria, and viruses – even COVID. 😱 That’s right, it uses just water, salt, and vinegar and can be used to replace bleach, disinfectants, sanitizers, deodorizers, kitchen, bathroom, window, carpet, rug, floor, pet, sports, and baby product cleaners. 🤯

It’s a splurge up front but once you own this unique system, the refill capsules come out to just 9 cents per ounce and completely eliminate single-use plastic bottles. Plus, the Recyclable Activator Capsules reduce plastic waste by 97%. It doesn’t get more Earth-friendly than that friends! 👏🏻

I decided in honor of earth day we would stop buying water bottles. I have donated all ours. We have 2 each and that is more than enough. We hardly ever use them as we use glasses at home or coffee cups. We even use our coffee cups in the car as they fit perfectly in the cup holders. We have used our water bottles when we travel though.

    • Peaches

Bravo! We bought 2 stainless steel bottles each about 10 years ago and ditched all other cups and glasses. Those bottles go with us everywhere. I have balance issues, so this was our solution to prevent spilled drinks.
