In year 3 of our testing, I switched my favorite water bottle brand from Hydro Flask to YETI due to its unrivaled durability. Proof that YETI is one of the biggest Hydro Flask competitors. This YETI was the biggest and most expensive water bottle brand we tested with a 36-ounce capacity and a $50 price tag. GULP! 😳 However there are more affordable options on the market the smaller you go.
Over the last 3 years, my partner has taken this water bottle to work and has lugged it around on various hiking trips and outdoor adventures.
Despite its high cost, it was more than worth the cost since it still looks nearly new 3 years later! 👏🏻
One thing that set the design of the YETI rambler apart is the stainless steel bottom. Every other water bottle brand we tested had a coating completely covering the bottle and no matter how durable, every single one chipped and scratched eventually. Our YETI only has minimal surface scratches and dents that are barely noticeable! I’ve really got to give it to YETI because they truly thought of everything from the design to the durability! 👏🏻
Speaking of design, they even changed their standard insulated bottles since I purchased mine to now come with their innovative chugging cap. This cap gives you a splash-free drinking experience and is much easier to sip from especially when you have your water bottle loaded up with ice. The screw-top is by far the easiest one to open and close out of all the best water bottle brands we tested. I’ve heard teachers prefer kids to bring straw lid water bottles to school, but after trying the kid’s Hydro Flask straw-lid bottles and experiencing backpack leaks, the Tayeka proved to be a better HydroFlask alternative.
There’s zero fussing with the Takeya lid to get it back on with a great seal and it’s simple enough to open and close my daughter could do it when she was in Kindergarten. Even better, it’s easier to clean than straw lids too! 🙌🏼

However, if you’re just as concerned with aesthetics as performance, then Hydro Flask is your answer! Even New York Mag agrees it’s the best choice overall. 🙌🏼
While this bottle is also a top performer, the simple and sleek design is what initially won me over. Plus, maintenance is a breeze since they’re also dishwasher friendly. Hydro Flask water bottles excel in keeping drinks hot or cold just like YETI and for the first two years of my testing, Hydro Flask was my top pick overall. 🙌🏼
However, I’ve noticed in year three that mine has slowly accumulated more chips and dents as our family adventures continue.
Another point to add, I take mine out of the house the least out of everyone in our house since I work from home and the rest of the family leaves the house with theirs daily. On top of that, I can’t help but wonder if the quality of stainless steel has degraded over the years. About a year and a half ago I bought each of my older boys a Hydro Flask water bottle and they’re already showing many signs of wear and tear. Granted they’re rougher with their bottles during sports seasons, but the overall condition of all our bottles is what made YETI water bottles take the top spot in our year 3 of testing.

4. The Ozark Trail Water Bottle is a great YETI water bottle alternative if you’re on a tight budget but it didn’t make our year three of testing.

Ozark Trail is a tough competitor priced under $8 or even under $5 per water bottle when you buy a pack of two! 😱 This insulated water bottle may be cheap, but there’s nothing cheap about its awesome performance. It’s a great option if you’re looking for a budget-friendly water bottle.
In fact, I actually found Ozark Trail kept ice frozen for the longest time out of all of the water bottles I tested!
I placed 6 whole ice cubes in each bottle and checked them every 2 hours for 8 hours straight. What I discovered is that Ozark Trail dominated in the ice challenge with almost 6 whole cubes still intact and barely any melting. Impressive! 👏🏻
However, what’s not impressive is that the bottle chipped and dented much easier than even the Hydro Flask bottles so within two years it was a bottle we ditched from our collection. On top of that, the screw-top lid wasn’t kid-friendly at all – even for my older two boys. 👎🏼
The design of the Ozark Trail bottles has also changed in the last three years.
The Ozark Trail brand underwent numerous design changes after being sued by YETI in recent years. In an effort to not completely rip off the design of the YETI water bottles, you’ll notice they look pretty different now. However, I noticed the new designs have a “new and improved” stainless steel bottom that resembles one of my favorite features of the YETI water bottles. 🤣
What’s funnier is that the new design overall seems to resemble Hydro Flask with its similar shape and easy-to-carry handle. The design changes may not be such a bad thing after all. 🤩
*Note that the new designs have not been thoroughly tested by our team, but we expect the performance to be nearly the same given the many 5-star reviews.
Here are some of my favorite things about the Ozark Trail bottle:
- Lowest price on the market
- Keeps drinks icy cold the longest out of all the bottles I tried
- Has an almost identical design and color options to YETI and Hydro Flask
- Top-rack, dishwasher safe
- Fits in my car cup holder
- Easy to grip and drink out of
- Never leaked or sweat
Here’s what I don’t like about it:
- I noticed some small chipping on the gray paint after a few uses
- Didn’t last more than a couple of years with daily use
- The lid doesn’t go on as smoothly as other wide-mouth bottles. (Although, I have yet to try the new design!)

5. Thermoflask Water Bottle gives you some bang for your buck but didn’t last more than a year in our home and it’s now more expensive.
Thermoflask Water Bottle 18oz. $20.99+
I was shocked to see the recent pricing on Thermoflask bottles. 🤯 My 18-ounce water bottle, available on Amazon, has gone up by 3 whole dollars so they’re definitely not nearly as affordable as they were when I began testing these bottles three years ago. Nonetheless, they do give you some bang for your buck with all the extra features they include! With each bottle, you’ll get a screw top lid and a straw lid with two straws so they’re a great option if you’re looking for versatility.
On top of that, they have nearly 40,000 5-star reviews on Amazon so despite any negatives I share, plenty of other owners are raving about this best water bottle brand!
The biggest downfall of the Thermoflask water bottle is the lids. Neither of the included lids is adjustable and they’re not very ergonomic since they’re in a fixed position. This also means it may take up additional space in your cabinet so they’re definitely some drawbacks to consider when buying the best water bottle for you.
After a couple of years, this water bottle also had significant chipping all over even with the recommended handwashing so it didn’t make our third year of water bottle testing.
Overall, when it comes to Thermoflask vs YETI, we know which one we’d choose. 😉
Here are some of my favorite things about the Thermoflask water bottle:
- Comes with 2 different lids and 2 straws
- Easy to grip with one hand and drink out of
- Affordable

Here’s what I don’t like about it:
- The handle isn’t adjustable so it takes up more room in cabinets
- Not as many color choices as the other brands
- Handwash only
- Wasn’t the greatest at keeping drinks cold

I’m a big fan of Nalgene, Kleen Kanteen , and Sigg brands. I’ve been using the same Nalgene bottles for 16 years, and we’ve had the same Nalgene sippy cups for 9+ years. The Sigg bottles we have used 12 years… One is starting to chip paint where I’ve dropped and dented it, the other one is still like new.
Klean kanteen has insulated version also, very good quality.

I’m a big fan of Nalgene, too!
I came here to say the same thing… over the past 20 + years my favorite is the wide- mouth Nalgene bottles. The top reason- the lid!!! It never falls on the ground. The top two places I bring my water bottle… to the gym and to substitute teach at an public schools. If the lid fell on the ground, oh man I wouldn’t be able to use that water bottle until I cleaned it! The other reason I love Nalgene bottles- it is clear and I can see how much water is left. The other reason…wide mouth and easy to clean. The reason I don’t really like metal insulated water bottles- they are so loud when you set them down places! True and funny realization. Another reason I don’t like metal insulated bottles- I have bumped my tooth on the metal water bottles too often and it hurts and afraid I will chip a tooth. So I love the Nalgene bottles because I don’t have to fear of chipping a tooth. Haha, I love my Nalgene bottles 🙂
We bought our Thermo Flask water bottles on sale at Costco several months ago. They are holding up great (I have 4 kids and a husband who is a pilot and uses his for work).
Ours ARE top rack dishwasher safe.
They came with a rubber boot on the bottom and are essentially a Hydro Flask minus the cost. Plus they fit it in the cup holders in our vehicles! I have seen them on clearance the last few times I’ve been at Costco (MN).
My kids have dropped theirs often and they still look good.
I highly recommend them.

Surprised to not see Buzio on your list. I have a 40oz that I can fill with a few ice cubes and cold water in the morning and still have some ice and cold water left in the evening. And if I don’t finish the water by bedtime, I wake up to nice cold water still the next day.

My Hydroflask has so many dents from dropping it. I hate that I spent so much money to have a product that dents so easily.
I’m laughing because how often do you drop your water bottle? I’ve never! Don’t get mad at a company who makes a good product that you keep “dropping”.
I drop my water bottles or my kids drop mine often enough. My kid broke the bottom off of a sip/swell water bottle. Cracked off on concrete.
We invested in the sleeve for our larger Hydroflasks both to help minimize denting and to help with carrying them. They are the large 64 ounce ones so you’re bound to drop them. The sleeves are available on their site and on Amazon.
I am with you! My toddler has dropped mine and the paint is chipping if it’s not dented. Every family member has a dent in theirs because it only takes one fall when full to have it dented.
I like dent on my hydroflask gives it a road worn look like a guitar 😉
We really like the RTIC brand. Keeps ice for the day, holds up to rough handling (trucks, tractors, equipment) and hasn’t dented or chipped after several years of use.
My family and I must be in the minority. We all have Yeti’s and don’t think they perform well at all. They don’t keep things hot or cold nearly as long as the Bubba cups from Walmart or any other cups we have for that matter.
I was just going to add about Bubba mugs! We have the cups with lids and straws and we love them! And the ice lasts for hours. And I agree about yeti, I invested a chunk of change on a big for my husband and it doesn’t stay hot as long as my 10$ contigo( for coffee)

Consumer Reports didn’t think they did either. March 2021 issue They rated the travel mugs that stayed hottest the longest. Zojirushi stayed hot 13.5 hours. Thermos for 7.5 hours. Bubba 5.5 hours. Yeti 4.5. Our family uses Bubba and love them. My drinks are icy cold all day. I put the tumbler in the bottom of the dishwasher and the top in the upper rack-two years and going strong.
I have many zojirushi bottles. Love them

This is the only water bottle I use. I LOVE it and will not be seen without it. I even have a SpongeBob Squarepants bottle! They truly keep your ice iced and anything cold stays cold for over 24 hours.
I use RotoScrub drill powered bottle bush to clean my water bottles and it works great!

Yes! Don’t sleep on Corksicle. I’ve dropped mine many times and they don’t dent or chip because of the coating. The walls are thick and keep things cold or hot for hours!

We really like the Bubba bottle with straw from walmart. About $15 for a 40 oz I take to the gym. I does dent but I don’t care about that.
My daughter prefers hydroflask but that is more of a name brand thing because she is a teen. My youngest does fine at school with the Thermoflask kids bottles. The lids don’t leak and are easy to get on and off for a 7 year old.

There have been days that I put hot water in my salsa Richey and it’s still hot the next morning so I believe it is rated the top one
I have several other ones like a yeti, Takya , Hydro flask, and bubba and the Zojirushi outperforms all of them.
Takeya is our favorite. We have several of them. Ours keep water cold for 12+ hours. I’ve given them as gifts before also.
I love S/M Simple Modern, they have their own site and you can also buy on Amazon…about $25, quite a few colors/designs/styles , get a boot with it, pick the style of lid that you want. Fits in my cupholder but not everyone’s but I have a 40 oz, but they have smaller ones. I fill mine up in the morning and I’m not kidding, the next morning…there’s still ice!

Nalgene is USA made but not metal. If you want a metal one made in the USA than it is only Liberty Bottleworks. I have never had one so can’t tell you anything more than buy at Amazon.

Owala! Their free sip lid is the best, you can chug or sip. I also like the hydro cell ones from Amazon. I’ve found I drop them if they are too wide so while I wanted one that held more water, I found the narrow ones that fit in your car cup holder are easiest to hold.

I have 3 sons that played summer sports, the Takeya’s were the best for keeping their water cold during the hot summer.
One son worked pushing carts at Costco, he loved his Yeti and thought it was the best (and because it was the “in” thing to have in high school); he finally admitted to me that the Takeya did a better job.
Another son ran cross-country in high school, his coach insisted that they drink water all-day to stay hydrated; my son liked the Owala FreeSip for the ease of sipping water all day.
I have that same battle brush and one of its really nice features is that you can get replacement brush heads for it. Less waste, less expense. I’m partial to my 24 ounce Contigo West Loop as the lid is leakproof, spillproof. It fits in my car cupholder and if I drop it while driving I don’t have to worry about a mess when I can finally pick it up.
I got a “hydra flow”, which I guess is the knock off of hydroflask, from Beall’s outlet. It was $15 for a 34 oz and seems to do a great job so far. However, the straw is really hard to get liquid out of. Sometimes I feel like I’m going to burst a vessel in my face from trying to suck the water out! lol! Is this an issue with these stainless steel water bottles, or am I doing something wrong?
Surprised you didn’t review SWIG, people are obsessed around here with all their different varieties of tumblers, travel mugs and water bottles.
I love my S’Well bottles. I have 40 oz Roamers for road trips and a bunch of the Travelers and Water Bottles and have had no issues, except for a bit of peeling on some of the funky color ones. But the bottle doesn’t sweat, ice cubes stay frozen for 4 hours and coffee is hot during my work hours. Their customer service is also amazing. A few of my caps lost the screw and I called them. They sent me a few different options for free, sip, straw and clip closed. I didn’t even know they had that many options lol.
Owala is another amazing brand! I was introduced to it late last year, and it is wonderful at keeping drinks cold!
I prefer Tervis for the great designs and licenses like MLB, NFL, Star wars, The Office etc.
I have had my Liquid Savvy bottle for several years. I absolutely love this bottle. Doesn’t sweat, I bought it specifically for Girl Scout Camp and bought one for the co-leader. We both still use them daily. Doesn’t dent easily and color doesn’t chip, both had several falls, of course it’s camp. Came with 3 lid options. They were $16-18 five years ago for 32 oz.

I’m sad to not see Contigo on here. I absolutely love my Contigo Fit 32oz. auto spout bottle. I’ve never tested the ice, but it’s definitely similar to the Ozark. Unfortunately mine gets dropped daily with my kids and not a single dent even with the occasional bounce across the floor. Plus, the customer service is exceptional! Full replacement if something breaks.
I wish you would test the Zojirushi . I have compared all of the bottles you have tested and the Zojirushi is the best. It also jade the best features like a locking lid.

Can anyone rate the Owala stainless steel water bottle?
Nobody tested a bottle with a fliptop. I have an Aquatix 32-oz bottle with a silicone boot and flip top lid that I can open with just one hand. The spring action was fast enough. And the opening is generously sized so I can sip from it directly or add my own preferred straw. A slider on the latch locks it. It came with an extra gasket and attached carabiner. I purchased a 14″ flexible jumbo stainless steel drinking straw from The Wright Stuff, bent it to fit and can now use the bottle with my modded Musucian’s Mask during rehearsals. And I can hang the bottle from the carabiner on my music stand. Most 32-oz bottles come short and squat, but this one is slim enough to pick up with one hand. The only problem I had was that the straw was a bit rough on the silicone stopper that sits inside the flip assembly. I could have used an extra.
Owala is my winner! Easy to open, has a built-in straw (no unscrewing, just push a button), fits in my car holder, and easy to carry.

My sister loves Owala for her children since it has a built-in straw. It is also double wall insulated and stays cold throughout the day.

I love my Owala and gave them as Christmas gifts last year. You can sip, drink, the carry handle also locks it so it can’t open while in a purse/bag.

We bought the 40 oz. Thermoflasks last year at Costco. They came with two lids and silicone bottoms. They were 2/$17.95. We took them to the beach, left them in a black car in the summer and there was ice left in them at the end of the day. We liked them so much we bought 2 more 2 packs to give people for Christmas. The only downside is they are too big for the cup holders in the car. They did raise the price considerably recently. For hot drinks, we still can’t beat our original metal Contigos.

We’re on year #5 of using Camelbak Chute Mag water bottles and they’re still going strong, even though they’re dented these days. I purchased these silicone bottle boots and it solved that: https://tinyurl.com/2w3awhb5. The bottle goes in the bottom of my dishwasher and the lid in the top and they’ve all held up amazingly well!

You can get a 64oz yeti (includes chug lid) for $50! I bought one the purple on the YETI site. This size for price was more convenient for me though even though it’s huge lol

Please do research on metal water bottles and the metal being used in the water bottles! Nothing is safe unfortunately and it’s beyond frustrating. Half of these water bottles shouldn’t even be on the market! 99% of all metal water bottles are made in China!!
You have to add that Hydro Flask has a LIFETIME warranty! That’s why I love the brand. I’ve had to replace my bottle through the company for free (just pay shipping) and it was an easy process. I’d rather pay half the price of Yeti and have the company back up their product with a lifetime warranty. That’s why I love HydroFlask over Yeti. They also sell “boots” or “bumpers” for the bottom of the Hydro Flask bottles.
I do like how Hydroflask offers the boots and you can buy a different cap to customize the look and also how lightweight they are!!! I have a 32oz and it’s been great! I just didn’t like how their 64oz was compared to the yeti. cleaning wise i can stick my arm in yeti to clean 🫢

I have a Lululemon bottle. At the end of the day there is still ice in the bottle. It is easy to carry with a small handle. Best of all the cap screws off with an easy to drink spout. Highly recommend the Lululemon bottles.
