Looking for ideas for a quick getaway? You’re in luck!

On September 23rd, the National Park Service will be offering FREE entrance to U.S. National Parks in celebration of National Public Lands Day — no special park pass is needed!

If you can’t make it for September 23rd, you will still have one more opportunity to score FREE park entrance this year. The final free National Park entrance day for 2023 will be in celebration of Veterans Day, on November 11th.

This free entrance pass provides a great opportunity to visit a park that normally charges an entrance fee like Yellowstone National Park, Grand Canyon National Park, and more. You can check out the full list of participating sites here. There are over 400 National Parks in the United States!

Know a Veteran or Gold Star Family? Be sure to pass a freebie along to them!

Veterans and Gold Star Families can receive a FREE Interagency Military Lifetime Pass to national parks, wildlife refuges, and other Federal lands managed by the National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Reclamation, US Fish and Wildlife Service, US Forest Service, and the US Army Corps of Engineers!

Active-duty members of the US Military and their dependents also qualify for a free annual pass to many of these attractions. Plus, entrance fees and standard amenity recreation fees will also be waived for Active Military, Veterans, and Gold Star Families!

For the purposes of this program, a Veteran is defined as an individual who served in the US Armed Forces (including the National Guard and Reserves). Gold Star Families are the next of kin of a member of the US Armed Forces who lost his or her life in a “qualifying situation” such as war, an international terrorist attack, or a military operation outside of the US while serving with the US Armed Forces.

If you’re planning to claim this awesome freebie at one of our nation’s parks or other Federal lands, please note that one of the following forms of identification will be required:

  • Department of Defense Identification Card
  • Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC)
  • Veteran ID Card
  • Veterans designation on a state-issued U.S. driver’s license or identification card

Before visiting a national park site, Gold Star Family members must download and print a voucher to present to park staff, exchange for an Interagency Military Lifetime Pass, or place it on the vehicle dashboard at unstaffed sites.
