My HP Instant Ink subscription is the savior to our “oh no, we’re almost out of ink!” woes.

A printer with a box of HP instant ink cartridges in it

My HP Instant Ink1 plan has been a summertime lifesaver! ☀️

After hearing so many of my fellow teammates rave about how their HP Instant Ink plan was saving them up to 50%2, I did not want to be the last to sign up for a new subscription and let this HOT offer pass me by!

In fact, you can score a $10 credit when you sign up for a new HP Instant Ink subscription3!

I know what you’re thinking: my kids are home for the summer, which means no essays, no permission slips, and nothing to print. But since plans start as low as 99¢ per month and HP only sends you what you need, there’s never been a better time to sign up and take advantage of this rare $10 credit offer for future use!

And while they may not have a lot of school-related activities right now, there are lots of other ways I’m using my HP Instant Ink service to keep my kids busy!

hp ink activity page and a printer

I’m so glad I became an HP Instant Ink subscriber before my kiddos began summer break! I love a good pen and paper craft, but I wouldn’t be able to keep up with all the homework practice, coloring sheets, and more that have been keeping my kids busy, especially while I work from home.

These printable roads have been the BEST boredom buster, they were FREE to print, and now I can’t stop printing them! 😅

And let’s not forget that HP Instant Ink came in clutch when I needed a last-minute Father’s Day gift idea from the kiddos. 😉

Plus, this FREE Summer Bucket List printable has been hanging on our door so we remember to check something new off each time we head out!

Honestly, I’m so excited HP Instant Ink is giving me a reason to print out all the free printables my Hip teammates are always creating– there are so many good ones!

So, how do the HP Instant Ink subscription plans work?

The HP Instant Ink service is compatible with 85 different HP printer models, including printers from their most popular series such as HP Envy, HP OfficeJet, and HP DeskJet. So if you’ve already got an HP ink printer that’s less than 4 years old, you’re probably eligible for a plan!

The service includes ink or toner, shipping, and recycling4 of our old cartridges. When we found out that we could change plans or cancel the subscription at any time5, our incentive to try got even better. No harm in giving it a shot, right?!

HP Instant Ink Subscription Service

There are a few different plans to choose from. Instead of being based on how much ink we use, they are based on the estimated amount of pages we might print during a month’s time. That means the price doesn’t change if I want to print photos or just in black and white!

The HP ink plans range from 99¢ a month for 10 pages (think prints for package labels, event tickets, or other random one-off prints) up to $24.99 a month for 700 pages (this is for home and small offices 🖨). HP also offers toner plans which range from $1.99 for 50 pages a month to $25.99 for 1,500.

We have never gone over our allotted pages, but if we do, it’s not a big deal. We can roll over6 a certain amount or we can pay for some additional prints for as low as just $1. Plus, if we don’t print at all, the pages we didn’t use are added to our available rollover balance! 👏

Heading out of town for a while? That’s no problem either! There’s a vacation option where you will not get billed for Instant Ink since you won’t be home to take advantage of the service (max 4 months per year).

Best of all, HP ink cartridges come via SMART delivery!

I really appreciate that the HP Instant Ink service includes smart delivery. That means HP checks my printer levels automatically7, and I only receive a shipment of ink or toner when my printer indicates I’m running low. This means I don’t even have to remember to order ink when I need it — genius!

In addition to my new ink, the company sends me pre-paid recycling envelopes I can use to dispose of my old cartridges! It really doesn’t get any easier than that. 🙌

Is the HP Instant Ink subscription worth the money?

YES! Getting the subscription just makes sense.💡 It’s super convenient that the company keeps track of when my printer ink is low and sends another cartridge to my door before my current one ever runs out1.

Also, I appreciate that HP makes an effort to be sustainable. They utilize recycled content to make their cartridges and opt to use less packaging. I really love that I can send back my old ink cartridges and HP Planet Partners4 will recycle them. It feels good to help out the environment, even in a small way, without much extra effort. 💪🌎

hp instant ink printing declutter printable

Check out why my Hip sidekick Emily loves it so much:

“Before you say, ‘I don’t need a printer’ or ‘I don’t need ink sent to me’, let me tell you I felt the SAME WAY… until I got myself a printer a few months ago. I was annoyed having to pay for prints for random documents and scooped up an HP DeskJet with 9 months of HP Instant Ink and immediately thought, ‘whyyyyy haven’t I gotten one sooner!?’

This has come in handy for printing return labels when I was limited on time, and very very last-minute gift cards for holidays (especially since so many stores around me were closed). But the best part?! The HP Instant Ink. I would have been in such a pickle if HP didn’t do the work for me by sending out fresh cartridges when my printer’s ink was low. I would have never been timely enough to place the order and the Instant Ink service has saved me from what could have been soooo much frustration.

I’m still under my free trial period for the HP Instant Ink, but even as someone who doesn’t print often, I know I’ll keep using the service once it expires – it’s just too handy! In the meantime, I’m printing off allllll the planning, organization, and decluttering printables I can get my hands on to start the new year off right.”

So what’s the catch?

woman at front door holding hp instant ink box

To be honest, I tried to find something I don’t like about HP Instant Ink, but I really don’t have anything negative to say about the service!

If you’ve got an eligible HP printer (or you’re considering buying one) and you want to save big on ink, I think you too will be pleasantly surprised with this service. Right now is the best time to try too since you can get a $10 credit just for signing up3. 💰 There’s practically nothing to lose because if you aren’t satisfied, you can change plans or cancel at any time5!

Even our readers love their HP Ink subscriptions!

“I love the HP instant ink program. With 4 kids in school, we have phases of printing for school projects and I appreciate never running out or having to make a last-minute trip to the store to get ink. I love that we can print in color for the same price as black and white, which helps with school projects. My husband gets the emails about running out of pages, but I actually appreciate them so we know if we should change plans for a month or 2.”

“I have been using Instant Ink for 7+ years. It’s a great program. I have changed our subscription many times and it’s a smooth process. They have an account page to show you how many prints you’ve used, how many rollovers, etc. Be forewarned, if they send you a cartridge and you misplace it, they will not send you a new one (because they know you shouldn’t be out of ink). Also, if you get a damaged cartridge, they will request you sent it back so they can examine it.”

“Highly recommended! I have saved so much money on ink over the past 5 years or so using HP Instant Ink. I love never running out of ink. When I would purchase ink cartridges, they never seemed to last. I can’t say enough good things about HP Instant Ink.”

yes! Another long time fan here—you got me curious, I dug into my emails, using Instant Ink or their Page5000 when they had it, for 8+yrs, Yes love it! My ONLY complaint is that I sometimes google for their webpage and get to old pages, don’t think they are scam pages, but usually old pages, my own fault, lol, I need to bookmark it, lol! Got my aunt using them too, we enjoy it, no problems! Oh I do miss where I could print an EXTRA set of coupons dot com printables and greeting cards and word finds and holiday crafts with the touch of a button—even automatic for the coupons, I had them scheduled to auto print each month. But It’s a Fabulous program and I save soooo much more than they Estimate with printing my coupons, I use the 300pg subscription often, had Page5000 for a time, and also switch to 100pg subscription at slow times. ——–ohhhhh MELINDA, add to your post: they also have a PAPER SUBSCRIPTION that you can add to the subsciption, comment me here if I should instagram/facebook in a screenshot of the offer on my subscription page, I’m not seeing it as a bargain for me, but I’ve been watching it for a few mths in case it ever becomes great for our household.

I am signed up for the free plan which is 15 pages a month. I occasionally need extra pages and they are $1 per 10 pages. Works great for us!

    • Jessica (Hip Sidekick)

Good to know! Thanks for sharing your positive feedback! 🤗💗

  5. TiffMeow

Love my subscription! I don’t worry about printing anymore. I have the lowest plan and it works perfectly for our family. We have hundreds of roll over pages

    • Jessica (Hip Sidekick)

That’s great! Glad to know the service is working well for your family. Thanks for letting us know! 💞

  6. melanie c

Yes!! We’ve been doing this for about 6 years and love it! I’m a teacher so I like to print a lot in color and our plan fits this perfectly!

    • Jessica (Hip Sidekick)

Awesome! We sure appreciate you sharing your thoughts, melanie c! 💕

  7. Laura

Good to know this! I have ODD so I absolutely dislike anyone telling me I can’t do something. This is not something I would like to engage with. I print random things at random times. I don’t ever count pages. So I will stick with a bi-annual run to Office Depot every year. 👍🏼👍🏼

  8. lazondral

Thank you for this. Have had a subscription for a few years but didn’t know about the vacation option.

  9. Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Hi Pamela! GREAT question. I was able to reach out to customer service and they shared this link with me of their qualifying printer options. You can scroll down a bit to view the listed printers. Hope this helps!

  10. Me

Very good to know. Thank you for your comments and the details. This would DEFINITELY not work for us either! Better to just buy my toner off Ebay!

  11. ElleS

I love Instant Ink! Been using it for a year. I highly recommend it!

    • Jessica (Hip Sidekick)

So glad to hear how much you enjoy this program, ElleS! Thanks for sharing! 🤗💗

  12. Tiffany

I have been using Instant Ink for about 3 years now and love it! I rarely remembered to buy ink at the store, or it was sold out, or I just didn’t want to shell out $40 for ink! I love that I don’t have to check if I need ink because it is shipped when I get low. So far, I have never run out and not had the next cartridge ready. This month is the first time since I downgraded my plan (after my kids went back to public school 2 years ago) that I went over my allotted sheets because I printed a bunch of extra stuff for parties and marketing stuff.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Yay! Super glad to hear you’ve been loving it these past three years, Tiffany! Thanks so very much for taking the time to share your experience with us! ❤️

  13. Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Great question! If you go over the alloted pages, you can roll over a certain amount or pay for some additional prints for as low as just $1. Plus, if you don’t print at all, the pages you didn’t use are added to your available rollover balance! Hope that helps! 🤗💖

  14. amandaa

No, the ink cartridge is normal size and can last for months/years depending on how much you print. If you print more than your alloted amount per timeframe, you just pay additional for more pages. If you have a credit on your account, the charge will be deducted from the credit.

    • hip2trade

Thanks Amber & Amandaa. I’m using up my final cartridge of canon ink. Just ordered a new hp printer with 6 months of instant ink included. 🙂

      • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

        You’re so welcome! 💞

  15. shey59

Also agree with others here, I have had my subscription for almost 2 years and still using up the credits they gave me when I joined.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

That’s awesome to hear! ❤️🙌 Glad you still have credits too!

  16. Jessica

Love this subscription, best one we have at our house, love not worrying about getting ink and it’s so much cheaper.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Yay! Thanks for letting us know how much you’re loving this service, Jessica! ❤️

  17. Alikia29

I’m sure there are different promos and things but I noticed that I get up to 700 pages during my trial period. yoo-hoo!

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

      That’s awesome, Alikia29! Thanks for sharing! 💖💖

  18. Ann

We’ve been using Instant Ink for over 5 years without any problems. My husband just finish printing off things for taxes so I will wait a few days until our new month of service starts before I attempt any printing for family genealogy. I like the fact that you can quickly log into your account and see exactly how many pages are left to be able to print for the month so you can possibly plan your printing accordingly.

    • Jessica (Hip Sidekick)

Thanks so much for sharing your helpful review on this service, Ann! That account feature does sound super handy for planning any printing needs! So happy to hear you’ve been enjoying your HP Instant Ink throughout the years! 🤗💞

  19. CaseyB

I bought a new printer at Christmas time for $40 and HP gave me 9 months of instant ink for free. So I can print 700 pages a month at no charge. It’s been really nice!!

    • Trish (Hip Sidekick)

Wow! That IS really nice, CaseyB! Thanks so much for sharing the deal you scored on the printer and ink! 🙌 💕

  20. Teresa

A couple things about the HP printing plan that I didn’t read in the thread. You can upgrade any time to get more pages immediately. Such as if you’re on the $.99 plan and get 10 pages for the month and then need to print 100 flyers for school, you can immediately upgrade to a different plan that would included as many pages as you need. You can also downgrade anytime, but the downgrade will not take affect until the end of your current billing cycle. I signed up for the $21.99 plan and forgot to downgrade by the end of the billing cycle, so I got stuck with another month of &21.99. It turned out to be great because I made a book for the neighbors children and I needed to print off over 200 pages.

Also note that if you cancel your plan, Since they send you smart cartridges, they will instantly make it so that the cartridges will not work in your printer. This is the only catch that I read. But, I don’t consider it a catch because it is a reasonable thing for them to do.

I’ve had my account for about two years and love it. I’ve upgraded and downgraded throughout the two years and never had a problem. So you can downgrade an upgrade as many times as you need to depending on your printer needs.

    • Jessica (Hip Sidekick)

Thanks so much for sharing such helpful tips and a thorough review of your experience the past few years with Instant Ink, Teresa! That is such great information about upgrading/downgrading your account to allow for flexibility with printing! 🙌 Glad you’ve loved having this subscription! ❤️

  21. Mrs C

I just signed up for this the other day, and while I haven’t gotten my ink yet, I am already enjoying everything else that comes with an HP account I didn’t know about! They are all sorts of FREE printables, from seasonal cards to calendars and educational worksheets, that are exactly what I need for my 4 year old! And they are all free!

    • Trish (Hip Sidekick)

GREAT! 🙌 Glad that you are enjoying all the other benefits and freebies they offer, Mrs C! 💕

  22. Barbara H

I have been a subscriber for many years now. I do believe it is a money saver, plus there is the added convenience of never running out of ink! We accumulate rollover pages when we don’t use all of our allotment (50 pages/month), which is helpful when you have a month with more than average printing. I highly recommend giving this a try.

    • Jessica (Hip Sidekick)

Thanks so much for sharing how well you’re loving this service, Barbara! The rollover feature sure sounds convenient! 🤗❤️

  23. Ervin Miller

BUT THERE’S A CATCH!!! If you unsubscribe, you will have to throw away all of your Instant Ink cartridges, and get all new ones from a store. The cartridges are “smart” with a chip in them, and they lock up your printer so that you can no longer print with all of your remaining cartridges. I’m left to throw away many $$$$ of cartridges, in order to unlock my printer.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Thanks for commenting, Ervin.❤️ It seems that if you decide to cancel, you can go back to using HP original Standard or XL cartridges. We’ll look further into these details.

      • Ervin Miller

Yes, but first you have to toss all of the unused cartridges. $$$ in the trash

        • Jessica (Hip Sidekick)

Hey Ervin! We appreciate your feedback on the ink cartridges and have added a note in the cancellation details of the post on this. ❤️

    • Victoria

Speaking to the point when you cancel your service and have leftover ink- true, you won’t be able to use any smart cartridges you have on hand (makes sense if you aren’t paying for the service any longer) But….you don’t have to throw them out. I saw a few talking about how you have to throw them away which wastes $$$$. Ummm, how about just tossing HP’s smart cartridges in the postage paid envelope included in the box of each replacement they send you? A much better solution than just throwing them in a landfill.

  24. Darla jane whitmyer

Are there coupon codes for this? Whay is the price after trial period? What if I get a different printer?

    • Jessica (Hip Sidekick)

Hey Darla! There’s currently a $10 sign-up credit offer, when clicking through the links in the post. 💕 There are a few options for your subscription, depending on the number of pages you’re wanting to print per month – ranging from 99¢ a month for 10 pages to up to $24.99 a month for 700 pages. HP also offers toner plans which range from $1.99 for 50 pages a month to $25.99 for 1,500. If you don’t use a certain number of pages, they can be rolled over to the next month too. If you decide to purchase a new printer, you’ll want to be sure that it has the “HP Instant Ink” logo on the box, then log in to your account at hpinstantink.com and click Enroll/Replace Printer. Hoping these answers are helpful! 🥰
