In 2021, many major retail stores including Walmart and Target closed for Thanksgiving Day, with lots of others following suit.
Best Buy, Kohl’s, Costco, and Sam’s Club are just a handful of other major retailers that also remained closed on Thanksgiving Day in 2021.
In order to help you make your Black Friday plans for 2022, we’ve compiled a list of stores and retailers that are expected to close on Thanksgiving this year. While many stores haven’t released their plans for 2022 yet, some have already confirmed that they will be closing on Thanksgiving, like the CEO of Walmart recently has on the TODAY Show.
With that in mind, we created this list based on the information we have from retailers who have confirmed their holiday hours for 2022. For those retailers that haven’t released that information yet, we anticipate them maintaining holiday hours similar to what they did last year. Most retailers have been following a predictable pattern since COVID shook things up in 2020.

They don’t really get a break- just more time to stock before Black Friday
Ridiculous that Dollar Tree and Five Below and other discount stores are open. The employees should go on strike.
In many rural areas, Dollar General is the ONLY store within ten miles or more, aside from a gas station. My parents live in NW central Wisconsin, and until they got a DG a few years ago, they had to drive ten miles to a grocery store. DG is four miles away.
Yay! Glad to hear some retailers are closing on thanksgiving. Family time or friend time or whatever people you see for thanksgiving… is so much more important than stuff…even stuff at a good deal. 🙂
Please stop the comments about companies being horrible for staying open on holidays! I know you believe that people hate working holidays but sometimes, it’s the exact opposite. 🙄 When I was single and living far from family, I welcomed any holiday hours gladly. Not only fid it mean getting anywhere from time and a half to double pay, it allowed me to not be at home feeling sorry for myself. Yes, there definitely can be people who don’t want to work but most of the time, companies ask who wants the hours. Sometimes your idea of helping others, is not helpful at all. I have always found myself angered by people assuming companies treat their employees like 💩. Some do but it is almost always the customers that make their job environment worse.
I worked every holiday since I was 14. In my case, I could avoid whatever family chaos that always happened. I either left for work before the bickering and yelling started, or arrived back home after the war was over, LOL
Plus blaming the company is wrong, anyway. It’s customer demand that keeps stores open. People need to stop shopping when they want people to have the day off, not blame the company for being open.
Just because the physical store is closed to customers does not mean all employees are off. Some have to still stock and if you choice to participate in online shopping on Thanksgiving there are still people running the updates on the sites.
Companies found that it saved them money closing the stores on Thanksgiving but they still met their daily goal through online shopping. It’s just more cost effective to have the physical stores closed and gives them good PR.
