Keep in mind these National Holidays and other free things to do in August:

August 10th is National Lazy Day which means you should take the opportunity to relax this month. 

We typically have a handful of national holidays and major sales to share each month, but what we discovered is that August is pretty quiet!

With semi-annual sales and other large retailer sales like Amazon Prime Day behind us, we believe August is a month to relax and enjoy the last days of summer. That said, we’re thankful August 10th is National Lazy Day so we have a special day to take a breather! While we’re sure you’ll do some shopping this month, don’t forget to relax and enjoy the quiet when you can.


In the meantime, here are some free things to do in August if you’re looking to stay busy:

Visit a National Park for FREE on August 4th.

On August 4th, the National Park Service will be offering FREE entrance to U.S. National Parks in celebration of the Anniversary of the Great American Outdoors Act – no special park pass is needed!

This free entrance pass provides a great opportunity to visit a park that normally charges an entrance fee like Yellowstone National Park, Grand Canyon National Park, and more. There are over 400 National Parks in the United States and you can check out the full list of participating sites here.

Home Depot Kids Workshop

Register to do a free DIY project with your child at The Home Depot on August 5th.

The Home Depot Kids Workshops are offered the first Saturday of every month with fun crafts and activities for your kiddos! The next workshop will take place on August 5th from 9 AM to 12 PM local where kids can build their own treasure chest!

To get in on this fun event, you will want to register online. Spots are available on a first-come, first-serve basis so make sure to get ahead of the game. Just scroll down to the “In-Store Kids Workshops” and click “Sign-Up” to register at your local store to see if they still have spots available.

On August 12th, Lowe’s will be offering their FREE monthly kid’s activity.

If The Home Depot freebie wasn’t enough to fill your cup, Lowe’s FREE Build & Grow Kids Workshops offer free DIY craft kits for your kids each month, too! It’s the perfect opportunity for trying a new skill and spending a little screen-free, quality time!

Through August 11th or while spots are available, you can register for the August Lowe’s Kids Workshop. This event will take place on August 12th, from 10 AM – 1 PM local time, kids will be able to build a fun rolling toy pickup truck! This is an entertaining and budget-friendly way to get out of the house on a weekend – and your kiddo will love learning to build their very own toy!

Kids can do a free activity at JCPenney on August 12th and parents will score a stackable coupon too.

Get your kiddo involved in another free monthly activity. Just stop by a JCPenney store on the second Saturday of every month where they host a Kids Zone area with FREE craft kits for kids! On August 12th, from 11AM – 12PM local time, visit a participating locations where kiddos will be able to color their own adorable pencil pouch featuring cute woodland animals!

Even sweeter, parents can have their own fun with a 10% off in-store coupon. This special coupon can be stacked with other offers or coupons to further maximize your savings – awesome!

Teens can work out at Planet Fitness for FREE until August 31st. 

Planet Fitness has brought back its popular Planet Fitness Summer Pass program for 2023! In case you missed it, Planet Fitness allows high schoolers (ages 14 – 19) to work out for free at any of its 2,400+ locations all summer long. It ends on Thursday, August 31st, so be sure to use the gym time while you can.

High schoolers can visit PlanetFitness.com/SummerPass to register for the program. Teens under 18 must register with a parent or guardian either online or in-club.

Regal Cinemas is offering its annual Regal Summer Movie Express 2023 event! The full event runs through September 6th, 2023. During this time, the whole family can score $2 movie tickets to select family-friendly shows every Tuesday and Wednesday. Cinemark theatres are showing summer movies for kids with tickets priced at just $1.50 each during the Cinemark Summer Movie Clubhouse. AMC Theatres nationwide are showing a new family-friendly movie every week for the entire summer as part of their AMC Summer Movie Camp 2023. Availability and show times do vary by location, but most AMC Theatres will have Movie Camp titles showing for $3 on Wednesdays and $5 on Saturdays throughout the end of August. The Kids Bowl Free program is an excellent program to keep you and the kids busy in August – especially if you’re looking for another way to beat the heat. The annual Kids Bowl Free Program offers kids (whose age does not exceed the limit set by the participating bowling center) the opportunity to bowl absolutely free throughout the entire summer – that’s a $200+ value per kiddo!

The program is offered at over 1,500 bowling centers in the US and Canada, so there is a good chance you’ll have this program at a bowling alley near you!
